“Ask Richard – Fireplace Help & Advice”
What Is the Most Realistic Electric Fire
Hi, I’m Richard from The Fireplace Superstore in Poulton-le-Fylde.
I Can Help Answer All Your Questions…
“What is the most realistic electric fire?”
The truth is, there isn’t one answer that’s right for everybody.
Electric fires have come a long way, and some of the latest models are incredibly realistic. But different fires create that realism in different ways.
When you’re choosing your fire, I’ would firstly look for four things
First, the flame effect.
Don’t just look at how bright it is. Look at the movement of the flames, their depth and how natural they appear.
Second, look at the fuel bed.
Logs, embers, lighting and the depth of the fire can make a huge difference to how convincing it looks.
Call and view the fire in person if you possibly can.
Videos and photographs are useful, but they’re never quite the same as standing in front of the fire and seeing it working fire.
And finally, don’t automatically assume that the most expensive fire is the right one for you.
Call in to the showroom and compare them, every customer seems to have a different opinion on what is the best flame picture.
Here at The Fireplace Superstore, we have a huge selection of electric fires on live display, including models from many of the leading manufacturers from the UK and Europe, many in room settings in the UKs largest luxury fireplace showroom

The Fireplace Superstore TV & Media Wall Size Guide
For Electric And Gas Fires
| Electric fire width | TV sizes I’d consider |
|---|
| 1.0–1.2 m fire | 50–55″ |
| 1.3–1.5 m fire | 55–65″ |
| 1.5–1.8 m fire | 65–75″ |
| 1.8–2.0 m fire | 75–85″ |
| 2.0 m+ fire | 85–98″+ |
For media walls, there are really two measurements to think about: how far you sit from the TV and how the TV size relates visually to the fire.
A useful starting guide for modern 4K TVs is:
| TV size | Approx. TV width | Good viewing distance |
|---|---|---|
| 43″ | 95 cm | 1.3–1.8 m |
| 50″ | 111 cm | 1.5–2.1 m |
| 55″ | 122 cm | 1.7–2.3 m |
| 65″ | 144 cm | 2.0–2.7 m |
| 75″ | 166 cm | 2.3–3.1 m |
| 77″ | 170 cm | 2.3–3.2 m |
| 85″ | 188 cm | 2.6–3.5 m |
| 98″ | 217 cm | 3.0–4.0 m |
These aren’t absolute rules. With a good-quality 4K television, you can sit considerably closer than people used to with older lower-resolution TVs.
One important point: don’t use the diagonal TV measurement when designing the wall. A 65″ television isn’t 65 inches wide — it’s only about 144 cm wide. That’s where customers can easily get their proportions wrong.
For a media wall, I’d pay particular attention to this
The TV shouldn’t be mounted too high just because the fire is underneath it. Ideally, when you’re sitting normally, your eye line should be reasonably close to the centre of the screen. A slightly higher position is common with media walls, but you don’t want customers constantly looking upwards.
Which Manufacturer Supply The Best Fire
There is no single manufacturer that will necessarily be best for every customer.
Different manufacturers concentrate on different aspects of the fire, and personal preference plays an important part.
That’s why at The Fireplace Superstore we prefer customers to see different electric fires operating and compare them for themselves.
Our team can explain the differences and demonstrate the controls, flame effects and features.
Are More Expensive Electric Fires More Realistic?
Not necessarily.
Premium electric fires can offer sophisticated flame technology, high-quality fuel beds, advanced controls and more installation possibilities.
However, price alone shouldn’t determine your choice.
A less expensive model may produce exactly the appearance you’re looking for.
We recommend deciding based on the fire itself rather than simply choosing the most expensive model.
Can I See Electric Fires Working Before I Buy?
Yes.
The Fireplace Superstore in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, has the largest selection of electric fires and media-wall fires available to view live on display.
Seeing several fires operating during the same visit allows you to compare flame effects, size, fuel beds and overall appearance before making your decision.
